Firstly, I have a sister. Her name is Vulvadynia, she's going to be getting a mention every now and again as she helps me out from time to time. Vulva was particularly useful the other day in obtaining some top shelf magazine literature from the corner shop. Unlike my creator, Vulvadynia has no qualms about entering the local store and asking 'what's your best seller? Which mag do the women tend to go for mostly?' and, of course, because the place is essentially on the doorstep, wasn't at all worried at the prospect of acquaintances from the school playground catching her at it (so to speak). So...before I proceed, I would like to say a huge 'thank you ' to my Sissy for all her valuable help in the name of research and saving blushes. (you're a wickle star...an absolute diamond). Rite then...
As well as the Internet, there are, of course, many different ways to observe the genre of Erotic literature. One of these is in paper / book form. As I have already mentioned the dirty mags, (which might be a good starting point for reader-research into the style and format of shorter fictional pieces), I will also mention that, on my journey through the www, I came across a large retailer of books and decided to purchase some literature that would educate me on both the motivations of writing erotica and how to do so successfully. Also some working models of fiction by various authors, in order to develop a knowledge of style.
This entry began on Monday...It may take a little while to complete as there is quite a lot of reading involved with this particular part of the investigation. For this reason, rather than making you wait, I have decided to unfold the page in sections, listing days and detailing the specifics of any literature read (as follows)
MONDAY : The Top - Shelf Mag.
Despite the pictures (which leave nothing to the imagination) Top-shelf magazines (commonly referred to as 'niffy' or 'porn' mags) do attract the odd story- reader. This is evident because between the sheets (pardon the pun) some short , explicit stories can be found. Today, this was my object of scrutiny.
The two magazines chosen (at the newsagents recommendation, and whose names I won't mention as I'm not too sure how I would reference them) were, crammed with various snippets of 1st person narratives..mainly recounting (in graphic detail) their sexploits. Some appear in the form of 'reader stories ' or 'confessionals' ranging between 200-500 words. Publication offers the nominal payment of £20.00 - £150.00 (dependent on word length and quality), so if the money isn't an issue, and it's your name you want in lights, this is probably the easiest way to do it.
HOWEVER!!!!!! I'm assuming that, even in the world of erotica, there are differing levels of quality substance... Although I'm anything but prudish... I found the use of language unnecessarily vulgar and due to the low word counts it flows hard and fast. It's debatable as to whether this type of writing can really be classed as having any artistic integrity at all. Even though there's obviously an art to creating such short and impactive pieces of work..there's no plot, the characterizations are minimal, and the story lines are so full of obvious twaddle that once you've read one it becomes more than monotonous to read.
Marks out of 10: 2/10 (this score may be a little generous but did pick up a few for the comedic, if not pretty revolting bawdiness and obvious non-reality of these apparently 'real' stories)
Final thought: Not for me...would rather give up writing all together than endure producing this twaddle. (I did intend to write something and submit to each area of investigation, but with words like 'snatch', 'cunt', and 'anal' etc , etc, etc being major ingredients of this particular recipe, I simply refuse to try. Maybe tomorrow will bring something a little better.
* tomorrow will be dealing with short-short erotic stories published in the form of anthologies...now theres some bedtime reading to look forward to :))
