Two weeks later, and still embarking on the challenge of reading as much erotic literature as possible, I have been exploring various anthologies involving shorter pieces of work. These anthologies are a fabulous means of understanding the formula of erotic writing.
As a basic rule, the work tends to begin within the scene, introducing and placing the sexy characters at, or sometimes just prior to, the area of pleasure where the story or event takes place. Some are written as first person narratives (not unlike the reader experiences of my previous post). Some are in the third person, and a little more say voyeuristic in style. Both seem to work well, so the choice of narrative is entirely up to the authors choosing, which might depend on which style is suited to ones own technique. The second part is the often descriptive, sometimes reflective (if written in the past tense) or main body of the piece. Because shorter forms of fiction have a lesser word count, this appears to be pretty graphic but, in some cases, contains some imagery that adds to the sensuality of the piece. Last, but by no means least, the story ends, often ceasing directly after the act...this part doesn't linger or dwell on what happened next, it merely leaves the reader with the images produced in the main body as the most relevant part.
Marks Out of 10: 6/10 A definite step up from the good old porno mag story.
Final Thoughts: This type of erotica certainly appears to be a step up from porn stories. This is certainly an argument in support of the fact that there are ascetic differences between filth and erotica. There's some good use of language, and the stories tend to involve more character, and therefore are more than simply smut. Unlike the previous area of investigation, and with the above formula in mind, I intend to create a small piece myself. This is the challenge I have set myself for the coming week (which I will, of course, share with you soon).
